Public Research Funding

PANEL ChIMMACC has received public research funding from the Italian Ministry of Health through the 2024 Ricerca Finalizzata programme.

Classified as a change-promoting research project, the study is designed to address an important area of clinical uncertainty: the appropriate use of preoperative antibiotics in selected patients undergoing early laparoscopic cholecystectomy for mild-to-moderate acute calculous cholecystitis.

The project aims to generate robust evidence capable of informing clinical practice, supporting antimicrobial stewardship and reducing unnecessary antibiotic exposure while maintaining patient safety. Its broader objective is to promote more appropriate antibiotic prescribing in emergency surgery and contribute to efforts against antimicrobial resistance.

The project is coordinated by Fondazione IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo, Pavia, Italy, under the leadership of Principal Investigator Prof. Luca Ansaloni and Co-Principal Investigator Prof. Lorenzo Cobianchi, in collaboration with the initial research units at AST Macerata and ASST Ascoli Piceno.

Public funding supports the scientific, statistical, regulatory and digital infrastructure required for the conduct of the international multicentre trial, including research personnel, data management, trial-related information systems, patient insurance, centre coordination and scientific dissemination.
